Charity and Service
Charity lies at the very heart of Scottish Freemasonry. From the earliest days of the Craft in South Africa, Scottish Lodges have worked quietly yet steadfastly to support those in need, both within the fraternity and in the wider community. Guided by the principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth, the Brethren have extended assistance through financial aid, educational bursaries, medical support, disaster relief, and countless acts of quiet kindness.
The charitable work of Scottish Freemasons is not confined to moments of crisis, but forms a continuous thread of service: helping families in distress, supporting hospitals, care homes, and schools, and contributing to local and national causes. This spirit of benevolence reflects the timeless Masonic teaching that to serve humanity is one of the noblest callings of the Craft.
Scottish Freemasonry is not only about ritual and tradition within the Lodge room, but also about fellowship, community, and shared endeavour. Across South Africa, Scottish Lodges regularly host social gatherings (festive boards, ladies’ nights, charity dinners, golf days, dances, and family events) that strengthen the bonds between Brethren, their families, and the wider community.
These occasions are more than moments of enjoyment; they are also powerful opportunities for service. Through raffles, auctions, entertainment evenings, and community initiatives, Lodges raise funds that support a wide range of charitable causes. From local schools, hospitals, and welfare organisations, to national appeals and international relief, the proceeds of these events extend the hand of Scottish Freemasonry far beyond the Lodge room.
In this way, social fellowship and benevolence go hand in hand, ensuring that while the Brethren enjoy the warmth of fraternity, they also fulfil the timeless Masonic duty to assist those in need.
